Your Pattern Design Mentor

Dec. 8
- 2013 -

Frequently I am asked by new surface designers – and by seasoned designers who want to brush up on technique, trends and technology – where they can go for continuing education in surface pattern design.

I always recommend Pattern Observer, the website and blog started by Michele Fifis in 2010 when blogging was brand new on the scene.

Along with her observations of creative and inspired pattern design in products and portfolios, Michele offers online classes in all levels of print and pattern design. I have it from Michele herself, in fact, that there are new classes coming in 2014 including one for printed textiles for the home.

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Michele graduated with a BFA in Fashion Design from Stephens College.  She interned with Zandra Rhodes. Michele now muses that she did not know that pattern design could be a career until that internship!

Along with her love of pattern, Michele said she “absolutely loves meeting new Designers and hearing their stories”. This was the basis for her website and blog, really. She loves helping people make industry connections, make a sale or meet new clients.

How does Michele stay current on technology, fashion, surface design and textiles? She travels extensively to as many shows as possible each year including Printsource, Surtex, Premier Vision and Heimtex.   Gift shows, international quilt markets, the fancy food shows and others are also on her inspiration route. We all know travel helps clear our creative vision and she travels so much that her vision for design excellence is laser sharp!

What she sees and absorbs contributes to the authenticity of her email signature “Your Pattern Design Mentor.”
