At Patricia Nugent Textiles, one of our favorite aspects of the job is connecting with designers all over the country. When designers make career changes or move cities, we love to stay in touch. Today, we are introducing a new segment called Designer Spotlight, where we will share some of our favorite designers and what they are up to now. We are pleased to introduce you to Louise Dean!

What made you decide to venture out on your own and leave the corporate world?

After spending five years working with some of the best people in the corporate design world, I decided I wanted to design my own ideas and to share those designs in my own way. I did not have an exact plan for when I wanted to venture out on my own, but, when my husband was offered a new job in a different state, we both decided it was now or never. Living in a new city inspired me to create something new, fresh, and heartfelt. Starting my own business was the perfect way to explore and meet new friends, while creating something unique and fun.

What is the best part about owning your own business?

My favorite part of my work is feeling that I am sharing something beautiful and cheerful with each customer that buys a product for their home, office or as a gift for a loved one. When my work makes a customer smile, it makes my heart smile.

During the design process, my favorite way of creating is through original watercolor paintings. To start out doing something new is so exciting. I typically get prepared by gathering together inspiration and sketches for a project. And, then I let my paint brush do the work. The reward is being able to see the finished piece come to life.

I like to think of every day as an adventure. Running your own business certainly ensures that each day brings a new surprise, as you never know what’s in store for you next.

Tell us about your brand and what sets you apart?

My designs reflect my passion for everything fun and beautiful. The hope is to make a cheerful and creative product that maintains elements of beauty and charm. The goal is to make lovely, sustainable pieces that people can enjoy in their homes where they will be loved and stand the test of time.

I hand paint all of my designs to begin with, in my studio, using inspiration from my travels, around the country and world. Almost everything is USA-Made with a few select pieces made in Sweden, which has been a lot of fun especially as I adore the design aesthetic of the Nordic countries.

Finally, everything is created in limited amounts, which means I can put a lot of thought and love into each individual piece.

What long-term opportunities do you see for your creative viewpoint and products?

I have a few long term plans already in the works. The company is currently growing to take on larger-scale custom design projects, such as custom wall papers and paper products. We already have so many fun products and gift ideas, we’re spending a bit more time on the design side than on the product development side. That’s about all I can say about it at the moment. But, it’s going to be an extremely exciting year ahead – doing new things and enjoying every minute of it!
